That’s because a new report says there is ‘a massive health problem’ with the drug. The reports say that ‘Viagra is not being used as a medical remedy but instead for sexual dysfunction’, and they say that this is in response to a new study on Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs.
The new report follows another in recent months that found the drug has been found to be associated with increased sexual activity, which can potentially result in more than one sexual partner in the future.
The Irish study, which involved more than 50,000 men in the United States, showed that Viagra had a ‘significant’ sexual side-effect profile, with up to 36 per cent of men reporting that they had ‘sexual problems’ when using it.
“There was no association between the use of Viagra and sexual problems,” the report said.
“This finding is also confirmed by the finding that Viagra users had a higher incidence of erectile dysfunction.”
Viagra’s makers, Merck & Co, have been pushing for similar figures, saying they are taking a “new approach” to treating erectile dysfunction. They say they are investigating Viagra’s safety and efficacy and they hope the new report will lead to a wider discussion about how we approach erectile dysfunction treatments.
The new study, which was conducted in collaboration with the Medical Research Council, is based on the results of the previously announced new study, which included a group of men who used Viagra for up to four years and reported sexual side effects.
The researchers found that Viagra users had an average of 5.2 per cent of the time reporting problems with erectile dysfunction. The study also found that the majority of Viagra users reported that they had ‘erectile dysfunction’.
In a statement, Merck said: “We are pleased to report that a large proportion of our Viagra users report sexual side effects. These effects can include a decreased libido, erectile dysfunction and sexual dysfunction.
“It is important to note that these effects are not necessarily related to Viagra, they are more related to the drug rather than the side effects experienced by Viagra users.”
A Merck spokesperson said the study was being conducted with the objective of helping to ‘minimise the risk of harm to the public’.
The drug has been known to cause some side-effects and is generally well-tolerated. However, it is important to note that the study did not identify any specific side effects. Merck said it would not comment on further information.
The new study, published in the journalPharmacotherapy and Therapeutics, is the latest in a series of small reports published by Merck about the drug’s potential health problems.
